Introduction

Department of Environmental Sciences

Environmental science programme was started in the year 2011 under the Department of Water and Health. Department of Environmental Sciences recognized as an independent department under the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 2020 and continued the various societal oriented activities like awareness, environmental education, capacity building, community services, etc. The department has been training students to serve the society and environment. The Department of Environmental Science has been providing skilled personnel in the field of water quality analysis, energy harnessing, air quality, climatic change, nanotechnology and has been expanding its horizons in the field of Green Technology too.

The Department of Environmental Sciences offers B.Sc, M.Sc and Diploma programs in environmental science and management specializations in both regular and open distance learning modes to train students for industrial and academic careers and Ph.D programs for research and development. Design of curriculum has given at most importance, as it should be related to the current scenario. Eminent faculties guide students to prepare various state level and national level eligibility examinations for research and academic eminence.

Environmental science is a multidisciplinary subject; students will be studying various subjects such as chemistry, ecology, toxicology, environmental engineering, remote sensing and environmental management. Students have industrial visits and field trips in their curriculum for practical and on-site hands-on experiences, as the environment is not studied between four walls. The department also organizes national and international conferences, workshops, seminars and training programs. Today, environmental policies have become core components; environmental education and best environment management have rapidly become international rather than national. Building on an unparalleled history of excellence in academic JSS AHER looks to provide in depth learning in environmental education, which will serve as a focus for research into local, regional and global environmental issues, management and policies in response to the urgent and increasingly complex challenges of the new century.

Trust Research areas

The continuous rise in population and environmental problems are witnessing a drastic destruction of our living habitat that is not only resulting in climate change and drinking water problems due to pollution but also in outbreaks of several communicable and non-communicable diseases. Water contamination and climate change poses many threats to human health from severe weather and water linked infectious disease risks to disrupted food systems and population displacement. To manage these water-related health threats and other environmental problems, it is important to switch over to sustainable management approaches including technological frameworks to mitigate the water contamination, drinking water treatment options, climate change in many areas, alternative energy sources, including green infrastructure, governance and technology.

The major research activities mainly concentrating on Advanced catalysis for energy and water applications, Carbon sequestration and urban climate change resilience, Integrated water resources management at catchment and rurban level, Air pollution and environmental modeling, Biodiversity & conservation and indigenous innovation, environmental reclamation and nutrient management, Renewable energy and biodiesel research, Water quality and conservation

All faculty members are well qualified and have good interdisciplinary research experience from pioneer research institutes that enable mentoring the students to achieve their research goal of their interest. Moreover, the faculty members have a unique diversity of research interests and actively encourage cross-disciplinary research problems. The research activities in the Department is associated and supported by a world class hospital with more than 300 health professionals from medical, dental and pharmacy fields to enhance the skills which provides better understanding of dynamic interaction of water-health-energy-environment nexus mechanisms and mitigation strategies. All faculty members have research collaborations with reputed institutions at national and international level and provide excellent platforms under research exchange programs to the students and research scholars to carry out innovative research in the field of Environmental Research and Advanced Technology. The Department has received financial support from national and international funding agencies to conduct the state-of-art research in the field of Water and Environmental Research.
