About the College:

J S S Dental College & Hospital, Mysore has committed itself to become a center for excellence in Dental Education and a world leader in the field of Dental Sciences including hospital practice with the objective of strengthening the health care of the country. JSS Dental College and Hospital' is located in the city of Mysore, Karnataka State, South India. Mysore is known for palaces and gardens and is about 150 kms from Bangalore. It is easily accessible both by road and railways.

The Dental College was established in 1986-87 under the president ship of Jagadguru Sri Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Maha Swamigalavaru and is at present conducting BDS and MDS courses in eight special divisions. The College is recognized by both the Dental Council of India and the Government of India. It is affiliated to the Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University (JSS University) from 2008-09. Initially it was affiliated to the University of Mysore from 1986-87 from 1996-97 it was affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The college is located in the JSS Medical Institutions Campus spread across over 38 acres. 5 acres of the total land is exclusively demarcated for the Dental College. Separate hostel facilities are provided for both the boys and girls students.

Courses Offered

JSS Dental College & Hospital, Mysore offers the following courses:

• BDS (5 Years undergraduate course)
• MDS (3 Years Postgraduate Course in 8 specializations)
• Ph.D., full time (3 Years): Part time (4 Years)

B.D.S. (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)

Duration: 5 Years
Eligibility Criteria:
Qualification: P.U.C. or equivalent course of 10+2 stage, with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as the optional and English as one of the main study language.
Marks: Minimum 50% aggregate marks in Biology, Physics and Chemistry and 50% of marks in English.
Academic year begins in August every year.

M.D.S. (Master of Dental Surgery)

Duration: 3 Years

It is a postgraduate degree with a specialization in a particular subject and is of 3 years duration. The M.D.S. course is available in eight different specializations.

1. Prosthodontics & Crown & Bridge 
2. Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics
3. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery 
4. Periodontology 
5. Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics
6. Paedodontics & Preventive Dentistry

Eligibility Criteria:

Qualification : B.D.S. Degree with 50% in an institution recognized by the Dental Council of India.
When to apply : In the month of April/May every year.
Academic year begins in the month of June every year

Ph.D.,

Duration: Full time (3 Years); Part time (4 Years)

Eligibility for Ph.D.,

1. The Ph.D., degree shall be awarded by this University under any one of the recognized faculties of this University.
2. A recognized qualifying higher specialty degree, postgraduate degree/diploma is essential with a minimum of 50% of marks in the qualifying examination or a second class or equivalent in the qualifying postgraduate degree/diploma. The qualifying degree has to be registered with the respective Council as the case may be.
3. Candidates with the following qualifications are eligible for registering for the Ph.D., degree.

Dental:

1. Dental higher specialties M.D.S. in different branches
2. Master of science degree in different specialties B.D.S., + M.Sc., (Medical) in different specialties

Admission Details

80% of seats are reserved under the merit quota and the same will be assigned by the JSS UNIVERSITY from among the students appearing the Entrance Test held in April/May of every year.
20% of the seats are earmarked to be filled by the management by merit from the other candidates (NRI/ INSTITUTIONAL PRFERENCES).

Admission Criteria for NRI/Foreign Students:

A foreign national seeking admission to this college shall enclose the following with the application:

• An "Eligibility Certificate" obtained from JSS University, Mysore. In this regard the student may contact the Registrar, JSS University, Mysore.
• A "Clearance Certificate" obtained from the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India.
• A "No Objection Certificate" from the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.
• A Photocopy of "Student Visa" and "Passport"

Facilities

Computer Center

A Computer Center is available with Broadband, Internet, Helinet, Digital Library, E Journals & Wifi facility.

Clinical Departments & Labs Facility

All the departments are provided with staff rooms, sterilization room, computer room, reception room, laboratory, store room, seminar room and clinics for both U.G. & P.G. courses separately.

Dept. of Oral Medicine & Radiology

The department is provided with 27 dental chairs and units, 4 dental I.O., X-ray machines, two O.P.G. X-ray machines, one E.O. X ray machine , two R.V.G. X-ray machines, one automatic radiographic processor & duplicating machine, Soft laser & TENS machines.
Special Research Interests:
Laser in pain control, TENS & TM joint disorders.

Dept. of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry

The department is provided with 36 dental chairs and units, two dental x-ray machines and one R.V.G. Exclusive child counseling room with toys and games is an added facility here. Separate O.T. facilities are available in the 'conscious sedation' section and for other minor surgical procedures. Two special clinics serve the disabled child patients with utmost care and concern.

Special Research Interests:

Cleft Lip & Palate children, traumatic injuries in children and preventive protocol for risk groups.

Dept. of Oral & Maxillo-facial Surgery

The department has been provided with 44 dental chairs and units. The department has facilities for inpatients and out patients, Operation Theater with high tech equipment. A seminar room is provided with CCTV from O.T. for live relay of surgical procedures and two-way interaction.

Special Research Interests:

Cleft Lip & Palate, Orthognathic Surgeries and Implantalogy.

Dept. of Periodontology

The department is provided with 45 dental chairs and units and is also facilitated with O.T. for minor surgical work and has one special clinic. The department is provided with 15 cavitrons (Ultrasonic scaling units).

Special Research Interests:

Local Drug delivery systems in Periodontal diseases.

Dept. of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

The department has 48 dental chairs and units, and two dental Radiography machines and one R V G . A separate clinic for Endodontic surgery is also provided.
A supportive laboratory for casting, all ceramic and acrylic restorations is available in this department. Phantom head laboratory with 100 tables, phantom heads, jaws micro-motors and airotors are available for Pre-clinical training.

Special Research Interests:

Standardization of Educative material, Endo-Perio problems.

Dept. of Prosthodontics, Crown & Bridge and Dental Materials

The department is provided with 47 dental chairs and units and a high tech laboratory for ceramic and Nickel chrome and Niti work. Flexible dentures moulding facilities is also provided.Additional laboratories for the demonstration of dental material and prosthodontics work are available, each with a seating capacity for about 100 candidates. Separate laboratories for P.G. students, technicians, interns and U.G. students are provided.

Evaluation of the Dental Materials.

Dept. of Community Dentistry

This department has 12 dental chairs. A large 'Dental Health Education museum' with various education models and charts, serves the patients to educate them even while the treatment is being given.
Bus facility is provided to the campus from different rural places every week. The department has established three peripheral centers in rural areas at P.H.C. level with regular treatment facilities. The centers are located at Suttur, Thithimathi and B.R. Hills.
Hi tech Mobile dental clinic is available with all advanced equipments to provide oral health care for the rural areas.

Special Research Interests:

Oral Health Awareness among Rural Communities.

Dept. of Orthodontics
The department is provided with 34 dental chairs and units. Malocculsions are treated by both fixed and removable appliances. The facility for computerized cephalometric analysis is also available.

Special Research Interests:

Cephalometric growth studies of Class II Malocclusions.

Dept. of Oral Pathology, Oral and Dental Anatomy, Physiology & Histology

The department is provided with facilities like, tissue preparation for histopathological examination. Research binocular microscopes with dark field and fluorescence, phase contrast examination unit and CCTV is available for research and teaching purposes.

Special Research Interests:

Biopsy and Malignant conditions - Early Diagnosis.

Hostel

Separate hostels for boys and girls are available on the same campus.
Gymnasium and Reading room facilities are separately available in each of the Hostels.

Library
The structural area of the library building covers a wide and spacious area of about 13000 Sq. Ft.

The library sections:

1. Reference Section

The reference section of the library has a capacity to seat 300 candidates and has in its store totally 6386 books.

2. Journal section

The journal section has the capacity to seat 60 candidates and has subscribed for 112 journals for the year 2008. Of these, the number of Indian journals subscribed is 20, the foreign journals are 82 and miscellaneous are around 10.
The total number of back volumes subscribed for the library is 2023. Of these, the number of foreign journals is 1608, Indian journals are 322 and miscellaneous are around 93.

3. Audio Visual Cassettes Section

This section seats 40 candidates and the total number of video cassettes available is 34 and the total number of computer discs available is 252. These things facilitate the students working as an effective audio visual education system.

4. Computer and Internet Section

Along with the audio visual cassette section computer and internet facilities are also provided.

Information Unit

This section of the library has subscribed 12 news papers and 20 magazines and internet facility.

Sports

The institution is having excellent sports facilities and grounds for outdoor and indoor games. Students are participating in District and State level competitions in

Seminars

The institution conducts National and International seminars regularly on specific topics by inviting eminent speakers from India and abroad.
