ABOUT THE COLLEGE

JSS College of Pharmacy was started in the year 1973 to produce quality Pharmacists with a Diploma in Pharmacy who could serve in community and Hospital Pharmacy. After the Diploma College completed a decade, it was decided to upgrade the college to Degree level. B.Pharm course was started in 1983 to prepare graduates in Pharmacy to meet their ever-increasing need in the Pharmaceutical industry, Drugs Control, Hospital, Teaching and Community Pharmacy. M.Pharm was started in 1991 in Industrial Pharmacy specialization. Ph.D Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences has commenced from 1992. M.Pharm in Pharmacy Practice is being offered from 1995-96. M.Pharm in Pharmacology is being offered from 2007. From 2009 onwards M. Pharm in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Assurance is being offered.

Location

The college is situated at Sri Shivarathreeshwara Nagara on Mysore-Bangalore Road on a spacious area opposite to JSS Medical College.

ELIGIBILITY
B. Pharm Course:

  • Pass in HSC/PDC/PUC/AISSC/HISC (10+2) or equivalent with individual pass in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Botany & Zoology (or) Mathematics both theory and practical with not less than 50% aggregate marks in the above subjects is mandatory.
  • A pass in English with a minimum of 35% marks is mandatory for all categories.
    Direct II Year B. Pharma course through Lateral Entry for D. Pharm holders:
  • Should have aggregate of 50% marks in the first and second year D. Pharm examination with a pass in HSC or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) or Mathematics.
  • Minimum qualifying marks in 10+2 as per I year B. Pharmacy eligibility with a pass in two year D. Pharm course.

Eligibility for M. Pharm Course

A candidate who has passed B. Pharm degree examination of the JSS University established by law in India or any other degree courses in Pharmacy recognized as equivalent by the JSS University and who has secured not less than 50% of the maximum marks shall be eligible for admission to M. Pharm course.

Eligibility for Pharm .D Course
A pass in any of the following examinations

  • 10+2 examination with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Biology.
  • A pass in D.Pharm course from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.

Provided that a student should complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.

Eligibility for Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) Course:

A pass in B.Pharm from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.

ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR NRI/ FOREIGN STUDENTS:

A foreign national seeking admission to this college shall enclose the following with the application:

  • An 'Eligibility Certificate' obtained from JSS University, Mysore. In this regard the student may contact the Registrar, JSS University, Mysore.
  • A 'Clearance Certificate' obtained from the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India.
  • A 'No Objection Certificate' from the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.
  • A Photocopy of 'Student Visa' and 'Passport.
  • Photocopy of Transfer certificate
  • Photocopy of Conduct certificate

FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Laboratories

The college has well equipped laboratories so that students can understand effectively, what they have learnt in the classrooms. Experiments are designed so that the basic concepts are well understood by the students. Advanced experiments in the laboratories, help the students to get an insight into the new frontiers of pharmacy and allied sciences.

Equipments and instruments

The college industrial Pharmacy lab has various equipments used in the pharmaceutical industries at different stages of production, quality control and packing. Tabletting machines, coating and polishing pans, Spray Drier, Bottle filling machines, Rotary tablet press, Colloid mill, Fluidised Bed Drier, Planetary Mixer, Kalweka multipurpose equipments and Quality Control instruments like Friability tester, Hardness Tester, Disintegration and Dissolution test apparatus, pH meters, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, H.P.L.C (schimadzu) with UV-Florescence detector, deep freezer (upto -200C), Stability Chambers are the important ones, apart from other modern and sophisticated machines and instruments to update the facilities.

Research Laboratory

The institution has well equipped research lab with equipments and Instruments like Shimadzu Gas Chromatography, Shimadzu FT-IR, Shimadzu HPLC, Shimadzu UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Electrolab six basket dissolution apparatus with Autosampler, Brooke field's Viscometer, Research centrifuge, Vibracell Sonicator, Electrolab Tap Density Tester, Shimadzu high sensitivity digital balance, Gel electrophoresis, computers etc.

Library

The library has a good collection of books, periodicals and journals related to pharmacy and other sciences. It also has a reference section, which is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. More books and journals are being continuously added to update the library. Presently there are about 8000 books in the library. It receives about 45 national and international journals. The library also has a collection of CD ROMs like medline and IPA. It subscribes to IOWA Drug Information Service (IDIS) which provide both abstracts and full text of articles published in about 258 international journals and is updated every month. It is available both in the CD-ROM and microfiche format. The library has internet connection with email services which is open to all the staff and students. JSS College of Pharmacy library is a member of HELINET (Health Science Library and Information Network) consortium of RGUHS, Karnataka. Through HELINET one can access online full text to 108 international journals related health sciences. The entire college campus is Wi-Fi enabled.

RESEARCH
Special R&D initiatives of the institution

Collaborative research projects

The institution is in close liaison with many Pharmaceutical industries and other institution for carrying out collaborative projects. The main focus and the thrust areas are designs and development of novel drug delivery systems, development of validation protocols and formulation development.

Publications & Paper presentations

The institution encourages the faculty members to publish their research findings in reputed national and international journals and participate in national and international conferences.
Guest Lectures are arranged regularly from experts of pharmaceutical industries. This facilitates the understanding of industrial culture and current manufacturing practices. Industrial visits for staff and students are also arranged.

Resident facilities

Boys Hostel is situated in the college campus and can accommodate about 180 students. The hostel has three bedded, two bedded bath attached and non-attached rooms. The hostel has spacious lounge, dining hall and modern kitchen to provide vegetarian food.
Girls Hostel is situated opposite to the college campus to accommodate 80 students. The college campus houses a newly built boys hostel with good facilities for about 200 students. The hostel has two bedded rooms with attached and non-attached bath facilities with modern kitchen and dining hall and provides vegetarian food.

EXTRA AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Recreation / sports

After college working hours, recreation room comprising of table tennis, Badminton, carrom, chess and other indoor games is open for the students of the college. Sports are also given importance, as it keeps students healthy and helps in utilizing his/her time for a better purpose. Athletic meet is held annually. Sports kits for playing out-door games such as Cricket, Volleyball, Football and Basketball has been procured for students use. The college also has fully equipped cricket training nets. Sports interclass competitions are also held. Musical instruments are also provided for the students. Annual cultural and literary event - Pharmafest is held annually. Students participate in more than 34 events. Students are also encouraged to participate in any state or national level competitions.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

N.S.S. is a scheme sponsored by Government of India, financed by both the centre and the state, implemented by the universities through the colleges. From the academic year 1987-88, N.S.S. Unit has come into being in the college. Under the scheme, a nearby slum has been taken up for integrated development. N.S.S. intends to involve the students in the community service and thus channelize their energy in Nation building activities. Rich experience gained will have dynamic influence in shaping the personality of the student youth. In short, N.S.S. is an education through service.
