A Report on The Third Annual Convocation of JSS University held on 21st October 2012

The third convocation of JSS University was held on 21st October 2012 at Sri Rajendra Auditorium, JSS Medical College, Mysore.  Dr. Jagadish Prasad, Director General of Health and Services , Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi who was the Chief Guest delivering the convocation address said that India’s significant achievements in the field of health have been made possible by the establishment of a huge rural health infrastructure, along with the formation of a massive healthcare manpower consisting of lakhs of trained doctors working under plural systems of medicine, a large number of nurses and other health care workers, primary and community healthcare centers and sub-centers, complemented by dispensaries and hospitals practicing Indian systems of medicine and homeopathy.

He added that time has now come to strengthen the healthcare system in the face of improvement in living standards of people, owing to urbanization and industrialization and added that the government had therefore decided to increase the healthcare expenditure from 0.9% of GDP to 2.5% in the 12th Five Year Plan. The private sector organizations were highly appreciated for their contribution to healthcare services to the needy.

Commending JSS University for promoting quality healthcare and providing training to thousands of students in rendering their services to the needs of the society through its Medical College and hospitals, he said that JSS Medical College is a model for medical colleges on focusing on their commitment to the nation in supporting sustainable rural healthcare by inculcating such values during their education.

The Padmashri awardee congratulated the young graduates and said “Learning is not finite, it is a lifelong process as well explained by Abraham Lincoln who had said ‘I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday’, “and quoted former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam: “A man, who graduated yesterday and stops learning today, will surely become uneducated tomorrow.”

A total of 362 graduates and post graduates received the degrees and diplomas in the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy which includes 20 gold medalists in the said convocation. For the first time two research scholars were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Pharmacy faculty and the first batch of Dental graduates and Master of Public Health graduates also received their degrees.

His Holiness Mahaswamiji graced the occasion. Pro Chancellor Sri. B. N Betkerur, Vice Chancellor Dr. B. Suresh, Registrar Dr. B. Manjunatha, Registrar (Eval.) Dr. R. Vijaysimha, Director (Research) Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Principal of Medical College Dr. H. Basavanagowdappa, Principal of  Dental College & Hospital Dr. B. Nandlal, Principal of College of Pharmacy Dr. H. G. Shivakumar and Principal of College of Pharmacy Dr. K. Elango were present.
